Hi all, New to the forum and boy, do i need help. I have owned my 1.9 TDI Galaxy for about 4 years now. She's a 90 bhp model 1999. I had owned it for about three months when one day she overheated, I got a chap to look at it and he diagnosed a head gasket. ll good and no bother since. Until last week.... After driving for around 25 miles I noticed the oil light flashing, I drive about another mile and pulled into a service station. When I opened the bonnet there was smoke coming from everywhere. Inside the rocker cover, up the dip stick pipe. I dipped it for oil and it was barely on the stick! Opened the expansion bottle and there was no water either ! So I tried to start it to move it off the middle of the fore court and the engine would hardly turn over. I rolled it back and let it sit for around an hour, when i filled it with oil and water i noticed water leaking from a pipe at the rear of the head. I repaired this and filled the engine with oil and water. It started and ran fine except it's now overheating!!! I had the guy who done the head gasket look at it and he said it was the water pump and thermostat. Being in the trade i removed the pump, When i opened it up it all seems as it should be inside. No impellor broken off, all moving freely. Has anyone out there any idea what my problem is or how to fix it. Many thanks.......

If you lost all your oil and water, its a fair bet the head is warped. When you had the head gasket changed you had the head checked and skimmed, right?

Because the warped head's the reason for your original failure. Just changing the gasket was wrong and only bought a little time, after which the oil and water started to disappear.

You may have caused a lot of damage this second time round as it was obviously close to seizing.

What the betting this engine had a tuning box fitted in a earlier life?

Yeap, the last time the head gasket was done it was skimmed and pressure tested. That time though the temp gauge give me warning the engine was hot. This time the temp gauge never moved from the norm until i stopped at the garage.

Ummm..as far as im aware, you shouldnt of tried to start it with no oil or water in it.

Could the fact that you tried to start it, with no oil or water, cause the head to go??

Your right mum of 4, you should never start an engine with no oil or water. I had to get the car off the garage forecourt as it was blocking the pumps. there was a small amount of oil in the engine. I think the damage had been done before the car was brought into the garage and stopped. I really need to get it sorted as soon as possible as my wife uses the car for the school runs. Even to the point of fitting another engine if need. I really hope it doesn't come to that.

Are you still losing water and oil? If the Head Gasket has gone again are there any signs - any emulsion in the filler cap etc? Water still all there? It may be warped but it is also possible that your leaking pipe caused it to overheat. If it over heated to such a degree it may plausible that the temp sender was damaged - or it's wiring. Is it actually overheating or is it just the gauge?

Test the expansion bottle pressure cap, these are a known issue with the 1.9 Tdi, and was a fault with mine recently. Test the cap with a coolant pressure tester.

Hi all, thanks for the replys. i have been a busy boy since my last post. I had a guy look at the car and he said he was 99% sure it was the water pump. So me being me didn't see the point of paying him

So anyone any new ideas????

Only old ideas....

warped completely warped head

old ideas are usually worth listening to..... :o

Tend to agree with Seatkid ...... sounds like the water is boiling due to an air leak somewhere ... mmmmmm gap between the head and the block and why were you losing oil in the first place? Even if the engine overheats you shouldnt lose oil. So it sounds to me as though the head gasket has gone again and more than likely it was damaged when the head was put back on or the head is warped.

Simple me..simple idea.....dodgy cap on the expansion bottle????..well i did say simple :D

lithen thimon ......... since when does the expansion cap leak oil? ;) :D

Umm....he did mean the white plastic thingy with the yellow thingy on it didnt he????..or did he mean the other thingy with the black screw type thingy on it where you pour too much oil in??

on arrival back home i opened the bonnet and the water was steaming out through the filler cap on the expansion bottle.

Yes Mum ........ ??? ....... Water boils at what temperature? ....... What does it produce when it boils? ...... What happens to the boiling point of water if you pressurise it? ...... what does the PRESSURE CAP on the expansion tank do if the water boils? ..... cmon woman ...you've done the course!

Mine still overheating when towing, I have had lots done to try and overcome it:

1. New thermostat

2. New water pump

3. New expansion bottle cap

4. Head gasket tested and ok

5. New radiator with complete system flush

6. All pipes checked (not leaking water)

7. Pressure test on system

8. Remap removed

and it STILL f...ing overheats, so maybe now it's time to go to the garage for a trade in, as I have now had enough, they are good motors when they work, but very very frustrating and expensive when they don't.

So good luck with yours, but before you throw loads of money at it, consider trading it before its too late !

Sorry to hear that JK ...... I thought you had sorted that. Strewth, looking at your list I wouldn't know where to start. Is it just when your towing matey? If so ...... its not the brakes on the caravan binding is it? Have you tried removing the thermostat completely and see if that makes any difference?

Its only when towing, I never considered the brakes binding, maybe that will be worth a try, they do squeak sometimes, plus it doesn't always do it. I have not tried removing the thermostat, but it has had a new one fitted, and they said the old one seemed ok anyway.

I will take the caravan in for a check, thanks.

well...since the average size of an elephants penis is about 6 foot....and the average male elephant weighs in at around 11,000 to 13000 pounds...i would guestimate at around 27kg.

Bit off topic this.lol.

and yes..i googled it.lmao.

Sometimes you'll find the caravan brakes will bind particularly after the first "push" espiecally when the piston hasn't been greased for a while. I clean and grease it every year for the same reason.

I am willing to try anything now, before I get rid of my much loved (or hated sometimes) Galaxy !

Hope you sort it soon mate ....... a good quick check ..... if they are binding you can't touch the hubs as I found out ... ruined that holiday as I left the skin off the back of my hand on those lovely chrome hub caps!
